New Building Developments

In 2020 the university's new GBP 45 million Carnegie School of Sport building was completed. This new facility is home to dedicated research laboratories, a 60-metre indoor athletics track, nutrition teaching kitchen, high performance strength and conditioning facility, human movement research laboratory, two environmental chambers and a Performance Analysis Lab in partnership with Catapult.

In 2021 the university's GBP 80 million School of Arts building opened. It is packed with the latest specialist facilities, including professional TV, film and music recording studios, a performance theatre and Dolby Atmos movie cinema.

Virtual Open Day

For international students, it is not always possible to travel to university open days to see where they will study. Leeds Beckett University has a virtual campus tour allowing students to explore the entire campus from the comfort of their own homes. This allows students to see where they could be studying, view course facilities, accommodation and the library. The virtual tour is an immersive and comprehensive experience, giving students the best possible insight into life at the university.

Teaching quality

In its most recent assessment, Leeds Beckett University has achieved silver status in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF), an award recognised nation-wide for the quality of education.

Introduced by the UK government in 2017, TEF is a system that analyses the quality of education provided by universities across the UK. Leeds Beckett was awarded silver, which recognised the excellent student outcomes at the institution, including progression to employment and further study. Study options

Study options

Leeds Beckett University offers a wide range of English language, university preparation, undergraduate and postgraduate courses. All programmes have a focus on making students highly attractive to future employers.

English and University preparation courses

Leeds Beckett has a variety of courses that help students improve their qualifications and English language ability, most of which are accredited by the British Council. The university's pre-sessional courses can be studied online before students start their course in September or January.

International Foundation Year

For students whose first language is not English, the International Foundation Year equips them with the necessary English language ability and subject-specific knowledge to study an undergraduate degree in the UK.

5, 10 and 20 week pre-sessional

Successful completion of the pre-sessional course will meet the English language requirement of Leeds Beckett University for courses requiring IELTS 6.0 or 6.5, so students will not need to take an additional IELTS test.

Undergraduate degrees (BA, BSc, BEng, LLB)

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

Academic entry requirements vary from course to course. Students are encouraged to refer to the course listing on the online prospectus.

English language requirements

If a student's first language is not English, they will need to submit evidence of their English language ability. This is an important requirement and is essential if they are applying for a Tier 4 Student Visa. The most common qualification the university accepts is IELTS, but Pearson and TOEFL are also widely accepted English language qualifications. The following are the required scores for the tests (these may vary by course):

  • IELTS: 6.0 with no skill below 5.5
  • Pearson – PTE Academic: Total of 54 (minimum of 51 in all components)
  • ESOL Skills for Life: Level 1 (pass in all four components)
  • TOEFL iBT: Total of 79 to 89. Minimum for reading (18), listening (17) and speaking (20)

Biomedical Science laboratories

This modern, purpose-built multidisciplinary space contains a range of the latest scientific testing equipment, walk-in cold and warm rooms and state-of-the-art IT.

Film studios, production offices and edit suites

Northern Film School gives students access to the latest production and editing software, so they can create and develop films, work with performers and bring their ideas to life.

Music studios

Leeds Beckett's specialist music studios give students the tools to write, produce and record music the way they want. It's an opportunity to hit the right notes in mixing their own tunes for music, games audio and TV.

Sports facilities

Carnegie Sports Centre offers an extensive range of high-quality sport and fitness facilities including tennis courts, fitness suites and a running track. Sport science students have access to specialist science laboratories and equipment including cardio-respiratory analysis, DXA bone scanner and an anti-gravity treadmill.

Performing arts

The performing arts facilities include black box rehearsal and performance studios, equipped with theatre lighting and sound systems, and access to professional dance studios at Northern Ballet's newly built Centre of Dance.

The Student Money Team administers the Hardship Funds and U.S./Canadian loans. Students can receive specialist advice about funding, budgeting, debt and welfare benefits.

Student Immigration Advice and Compliance

The Student Immigration Advice and Compliance team is available to provide help for international students throughout their stay at Leeds Beckett. The team can give advice for issues such as visas, immigration status, post-study working, pre-departure support and much more.

Scholarships and funding
